Well Protected Original Ancient Town Shaxi

Shaxi Ancient Town is located in South-Western part of Jianchuan, Yunnan Province. Many people know Dali and Lijiang, but do not know Shaxi, such a beautiful ancient town, is just locatd between both cities. It is in a small Bazi (valley) surrounded by mountains, covering an area of only 26 square kilometers, but it has beautiful mountains and waters. It also has rich products due to the good climate and fertile land. Bai people is the main minority surrounding Shaxi. Besides, Han, Yi and Lisu people also resident here. 

History of Shaxi

Shaxi is an ancient town of thousands years history, dated from more than 2400 years ago ( the Spring and Autumn Period in China history). The Copper mine site in East Shaxi tell us wordlessly that Shaxi was the center of bronze working since more than 400 B.C. So it is one of the birthplaces of Yunnan Bronze Culture. In Tang and Song Dynasty, Shaxi is one of the important town on the tea-horse road. Meanwhile, Shaxi also witnessed the Buddhsim spread to Yunnan through this ancient business road. 

What to see at Shaxi

How to get to Shaxi ancient town

Since it is located between Dali and Lijiang, at first, you need to travel to Dali or Lijiang. Then you could take the bus at local bus station to Jianchun (a county). It takes around 3-3.5 hours. Finally, you need to take mini-van from Jianchuan bus station to Shaxi. It needs about 30-40 minutes. 

As an original ancient town, Shaxi is one of the most worth to visit ancient towns in China. It becomes known by more and more people with its special beauty and charming. If you are interested in it, do not miss it before it is ruined by commercialization.
